A RESTAURANT to have stood the test of time is quite remarkable. Thirty-five years
in one location is a step above. And for this to have all been accomplished by
an immigrant who, until age 17 did not know the first word of English, is an amazing
accomplishment, without a doubt. But John Perros, owner of Giovanni's, wasn't
about to let a little language barrier get in the way of his dreams. After
having survived World War II in Athens, Greece, he emigrated to the United States
in 1954 at the age of 17 and he worked hard to assimilate. He learned the language,
learned the ropes, and bought his first restaurant only 6 years later.
Now,
35 years after he opened Giovanni's, he still works hard to bring his customers
the very best in Italian cuisine. He's proud of what he has achieved, and with
good reason. His restaurant is one of the best-kept secrets on Atlantic Avenue.
So
what makes it so great? Two words: the food. They make all their own sauces and
doughs in house. Their gourmet pizzas-Greek, Hawaiian, Spinacoli, Veggie, White..
all scrumptious-will make your mouth water. And while they have a wide selection
of wines for their adult customers, they are a very family-friendly place: a children's
menu is available-and is generous in its offerings. There's also a light-side
menu for those wanting to watch their waist... or those saving room for one of
the divine desserts Giovanni's offers.
Perros's
daughter Stacie is the General Manager, and the family pride goes far in this
establishment. She's worked in the business for years, and knew that this was
her calling. She loves the hustle and bustle of a restaurant, and is thrilled
to know that she is offering her customers authentic food and atmosphere. And
she is proud to work with her dad, training to take over the reigns from him in
a few years.
And
while the elder Perros knows that retirement is coming, he is not content to just
rest on the laurels of his delicious offerings at his popular restaurant. He is
dedicated to giving back to his community- he's served on many committees and
boards in his industry, and is the 3-time past president of the Greek community
organization through the Greek Church in Norfolk.
And
why does he do all this? "This is the greatest country in the world, he says
simply. "I travel a lot, and I know. I see what we have. Virginia Beach is
a great city. In fact, he is so committed to his community that he partnered with
a friend named Jim Johnson a few years ago and opened four amusements at the oceanfront
The Mirror Maze, the Haunted Mansion, The Fun House, and The Time Machine.
Take
a day to enjoy what he offers - amazing gastronomie and diversions for your visit
